Usually -- strike that, most assuredly -- the winner of the Fifa table is decided by week five, when manager Above instills fear into all "competition" by blowing all who oppose him off the pitch with astronomical goal differentials. Usually, it's always a fight to see who can take second place. Usually, discussion over who can upset manager Above in the playoffs are surfacing. And usually, those same talks are dismissed because the man, Above, is just that good. Basically, in this Fifa ’09 era, manager Above is king, and we all play second fiddle to him... usually.
However, this season is anything but the usually. With three teams vying for the top of the table (none of which coached by manager Above) the Premier League fans are pouring into the stands, selling out fixtures at an alarming rate. A Yeovil Town supporter said it best, “The league is finally at a point where any club can beat anyone on any given day. It makes the matches so exciting to watch!” This sentiment is echoed around the world as the Premier League has reached an all-time high in activity and matches played (some clubs eclipsing the ten game mark in a little over a week.)
As the league turns down the stretch run to see who wins the table, it’s a dead lock. Juventus FC has the most points at the moment, but if Liverpool secures six more points, and AS Roma pulls alongside Juventus by securing three more points, the top of the table will become the closest it’s been in Fifa history. Liverpool has a +3 GD (goal differential) lead on Roma, yet Roma has the head-to-head tiebreak on Juventus; so it really is a deadlock, and the table will most likely be decided by each club’s final game(s).
Whatever the case, one thing is for certain, the fixture of the year will be Liverpool FC against Juventus FC. This is unquestionable the match for the table, should the clubs take care of business against the rest of their schedule. Yes, AS Roma may have the easiest remaining schedule out of these clubs, but being down -3 in GD to Liverpool will put Roma at a disadvantage, giving surprise club of the year, Liverpool, the inside track to glory.
Defending champions AC Milan aren’t done yet either, but manager Above isn’t much of a GM, seeing as how the club he put together visibly brings down his level of play. Sporting Lisbon still has an outside chance to win the table alongside Wellington Phoenix, yet it’s not likely unless the top three each drop more points. A sleeper club is Portsmouth; should manager Ross go on a mighty fine match winning streak, he will find himself right in the middle of a table chase, or smack dab in front. Only time will tell if any of these clubs can maneuver themselves into position to win it.
For the moment, the three clubs the world turns its attention to are Juventus FC, Liverpool FC, and AS Roma. Stay tuned boys, it’s going to be a wild ride – one far from the usual!
