The off-season for Liverpool was a complete overhaul for the English club. It saw the club bring there most successful manager in club history(Owens) return to the club for soon to be starting his 6th term. Club owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett have given manager Owens one more chance to try and get the club going back in the right direction after Owens failed to get the club into the playoffs for the 1st time in his previous 5 seasons with the club. With the new custom club season just announced, the owners gave Owens a 100 million pounds to go out and draft his own custom built and tailored made team to try and get things right, back on the red half of merseyside.

Before the draft got going, many fans and local media projected Owens using one of his 1st picks on Liverpool legendary midfielder Steven Gerrard. Gerrard was the inspirational force behind Liverpools only NGL/OSPN/TFGL Premiership title back in season 8. Owens and Gerrard have had a well documented up and down relationship over there time at the club. Owens made it clear it was time to move on by using his second round pick on super star midfielder/winger/striker, Robinho. Quickly after the draft was over, Owens had handed Robinho the most famous number at Liverpool....the number 8. This number had been worn by previous Anfield legends such as Steven Gerrard and Ian Rush. Many fans and media outlets around Anfield thought that 1st round and the clubs 1st overall selection Fernando Torres would be given the number. So many didn't think Robinho deserved the famous number 8, he would quickly silence the doubters.

The season began with Liverpool hosting Athletico Madrid at Anfield. The game was dominated by the reds, yet Athletico had kept the match 1-1 late. With the game smilingly heading for a disappointing opening season draw, Robinho would fire home and 25 yard laser to score in stoppage time(94 minute) to steal the 3 points. The ground was in bedlam when the goal hit the back of the net. Robinho once scoring the goal, would immediately run for the bench and jump on top of manager Owens, as would the whole team. It was another late dramatic ending at the hollowed ground and would get the Kop on newcomer Robinho's side. Robinho and the rest of the newly assembled star studded Liverpool side will have a lot more work to do if they hope to make a long term impression on the red half of merseyside. But it is clear Liverpool has a "new number 8" play maker in the midfield.
